Why Surge Protection? Why SurgeShield?

With nearly 1.5 million lightning strikes per year*, power surges are a fact of life in Florida. All it takes is one electrical surge traveling into your home to cause significant damage to your major motor-driven appliances. Major appliances are costly to repair and replacement costs could be as much as $7,200, or more.

FPL Energy Services recommends that you make SurgeShield your first line of defense against damage to your major motor-driven appliances from surges caused by lightning.1

Enlightening Facts:

  • Florida is the lightning capital of the U.S.*
  • Power surges are one of the main causes of damage to air conditioners.
  • The electricity flowing within a lightning bolt can reach 2 million volts.
  • Electrical storms cause approximately $100 million in property damage each year.
  • Surges affecting your electric lines can cause off and on cycling of large appliances potentially damaging or destroying them.
  • Plug-in surge protectors alone used for electronics cannot protect all your appliances against major electrical surges.**

Protecting your home is easy with SurgeShield. SurgeShield can be your first line of defense against damage to your motor-driven appliances.

**Remember to protect your sensitive electronics, such as your TVs, computers, home theater systems, etc. One of the most effective ways to assure your sensitive electronic equipment and small appliances are protected is to use SurgeShield along with plug-in surge protection. SurgeShield alone cannot protect sensitive electronics. These electronics should be protected against internal surges caused by the on-and-off cycling of large appliances, and surges entering through other lines such as your home’s phone, cable and data lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Following are some frequently asked questions. Click on the link below for additional FAQs.

What is SurgeShield?

SurgeShield is a surge protection program administered by FPL Energy Services, Inc. ("FPLES"), utilizing a meter-based U.L. Listed device. The surge protector is installed in typically a few minutes at your electric meter by a FPLES approved field technician. SurgeShield is available for single-family homes, duplexes, condos and townhomes.

What does SurgeShield provide?

Participating SurgeShield customers receive 24-hour protection, all year long, for their home's major motor-driven appliances. These include A/C, refrigerator, washer, dryer, well and pool pumps (within 4 feet of their home), dishwasher, ovens/range, water heater and ceiling fans. SurgeShield customers get the peace of mind that they could sleep through any storm, knowing their home’s major motor-driven appliances are protected from damaging surges.

If I already have plug-in surge protectors in my home, do I really need SurgeShield?

Plug-in surge protectors alone cannot protect all your major motor-driven appliances. For exceptional protection against surges that pass through electric lines, we recommend a combination of plug-in surge protectors and an electric meter-based device, such as SurgeShield.

SurgeShield will handle surges up to 100 times greater than plug-in protectors, and acts instantaneously to reduce, if not eliminate, the amount of surge entering the home through electric lines. Afterwards, it is the plug-in protectors that handle these reduced surge levels that can affect sensitive electronics. Plug-in protectors handle surges that enter through other lines such as cable, telephone, satellite, internet or other connections. The SurgeShield program does not cover sensitive electronics, such as TVs, computers, etc., however it is designed to serve as the first line of defense to help protect major motor-driven appliances from damaging surges that pass through electric lines.
